Copper, Glas, Brass, Gouache on linen
189 x 63 x 52 cm
“I am made of copper that once carried water and linen that once was a surface for painting. My materials have lived other lives before becoming this form. The textile that surrounds the light is stained and colored until it begins to resemble leather, so that what is soft appears strong, and what is familiar becomes uncertain.
I belong to a new generation of works that grew out of The Living Room. The name Copper (Opa) carries this idea of origin and continuation. My copper elements are all different, shaped by time and use, and cannot be reproduced in the same way.
Under a microscope, the surface of copper reveals landscapes that look like distant worlds. I carry these hidden structures on my surface and into the light. I am an object that was once functional, and now I am something else — something between sculpture, light, and memory.”
